Father’s Day is here, and every year it feels like the challenge of finding the perfect gift for my husband grows. As a 42-year-old woman married for over two decades, I’ve tried almost every gift idea under the sun. But this year, I wanted to do something different - something heartfelt, personal, and involving the kids.

Our children, a spirited 12-year-old daughter, and a screen-focused 15-year-old son, really like any opportunity to get creative (as long as it doesn't take away too much time from video games and outside time). So, we decided to make a gift for their dad using my trusty Cricut. Since my husband is diabetic, we’ve learned to be creative with our gift choices, ensuring they are thoughtful of his health. This year, we crafted custom bottle tags to adorn six different flavors of diet and "zero" sodas.

Why Bottle Tags?

The idea of pop bottle tags came from my endless search for something practical yet personal made using my Cricut. Bottle tags are a fantastic way to add a personal touch to an otherwise ordinary gift. They are customizable, fun to make, and can be hung around the necks of soda bottles, making them both decorative and functional.

Getting Started with the Cricut

For those who haven’t used a Cricut before, it’s a versatile cutting machine that can cut, score, and print a variety of materials. I found a set of bottle tag templates available as a free download online, which made the project both cost-effective and straightforward.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how we created our Father’s Day bottle tags:

Materials Needed:

  • Bottle tag templates (free download)

  • Cricut machine (or any cutting machine like Silhouette)

  • Cardstock in various colors and patterns

  • Glue or glue tape dispensers

  • Markers or pens for personalization

  • Six bottles of diet or "zero" soda (I'm hoping to give these a try sometime in the future)

  • Optional: Gift cards and/or candy to put inside the tags

Step 1: Download and Customize the Template

First, we downloaded the free bottle tag templates. These templates are a lifesaver for anyone needing a quick and inexpensive gift idea. I edited the templates to make better puns than were provided in the original download (ha!). The edited ones are the ones I'm providing to you for free!

Step 2: Cutting the Tags

Using my Cricut, we used the Print and Cut feature and cut out and scored the main part of the tags from cardstock. The Cricut’s precision made this part a breeze, ensuring each tag was perfectly shaped and scored. If you don’t have a Cricut, you can also use a Silhouette or even cut and score the tags by hand, though it might take a bit longer. The kids enjoyed selecting the colors and patterns for each tag, making the process a collaborative effort.

Step 3: Assembling the Tags

Once all the pieces were cut, scored, and printed, it was time for assembly. Both children worked to glue everything together. They thought that the soda puns were cute...corny, but still cute.

Step 4: Preparing the Soda Bottles

We picked up six different flavors of diet or "zero" sodas to honor my husband's dietary needs. Once we had the bottles, we hung the tags around their necks. It’s a simple yet effective way to present a gift. You can also choose to add gift cards and/or candy to each of the cards for some extra pizzazz. You can see that we added sugar free saltwater taffy candy to each of the little boxes. My daughter also picked out a cute Walmart gift card to put in one of them. What do you think?

Why This Gift Works

This project was a hit for several reasons:

  1. Personal Touch: If you choose to, the tags can be used to convey personal messages and memories, making the gift much more meaningful.

  2. Kid-Friendly: The kids were able to participate fully, from designing and cutting to assembling and personalizing.

  3. Health-Conscious: By choosing diet and "zero" sodas, we made sure the gift was something my husband could enjoy without worrying about his sugar intake.

  4. Budget-Friendly: The templates were free (I tweaked them to meet my needs), and we used cardstock we already had at home. The only additional cost was the soda....and the gift card we decided to include with the gift.

Final Thoughts

Creating these bottle tags was not just about making a gift - it was about spending quality time together as a family. The kids had a blast, and it was heartwarming to see their excitement and creativity. This Father’s Day, my husband will not only receive a gift but also a bundle of love and effort from his children.

For those looking for a last-minute, meaningful gift, I highly recommend trying out these bottle tags. They are easy to make, budget-friendly, and can be customized to fit any personality or occasion. Plus, they are a fantastic way to involve the kids in gift-making, teaching them the value of effort and creativity.

Happy Father’s Day to all the incredible dads out there! And to all those choosing to craft with their kids this week, good luck and Godspeed.
